お盆体験

英会話スクール　イージィ コミュニケーションズの夏休みを、講師やスタッフも思い思いに満喫してリフレッシュしてきました。そんな中に、日本の「お盆休み」を新しくできた日本の家族と体験した講師がいます。日本のお盆をはじめて体験した外国人講師の「O-bon story」です。日本のお盆の体験、そして自分の国の文化との比較などが書かれています。

すべて英語で書いてありますが、自分たちの文化に関係したことなどは、比較的読みやすいはずです。１度目はとりあえず読んでみて、２度目はわからない単語を調べつつ、３度目は１文１文理解しながら…と、何回か読んでいると意外と理解できるものです。久しぶりの英語ブログです。がんばって呼んでみてね！

O-bon

I am an Englishman who recently got married to a beautiful Japanese woman from Matsumoto. My in-laws have taken me into their family, and so they invited me to take part in their O-bon ceremony during the August holidays.

During the vacation we went together to their family's cemetery to pay respects to their ancestors. It was both very somber and very tender. First I helped to pour water on the gravestones and lit incense. We put flowers
either side of the gravestone and offered fruit and rice. When we got home we lit bark at the outside the house and ate a meal together.

It was fascinating to share in this tradition of remembrance. It made me think about my own culture's traditions. On November 2nd Catholics respect All Soul's Day when the church holds a Requiem Mass (a special cermony) for
the dead. Families visit graves and remember lost loved ones; they clean the grave and leave flowers. Inside the church people light a candle for the deceased and say a prayer for their souls.

I was very happy and honored to take part in my family's O-bon: a very special Japanese tradition. However, I was also struck by so many similarities between the traditions of my country and my new home.
